Upakar Foundation, in collaboration with DC Desi Summer, presents headliner Aparna Nancherla and featuring Shahryar Rizvi for a night of comedy!

Aparna Nancherla has an intimidating name, but don’t be scared! In fact, she’s quite approachable onstage, from a heckler’s perspective. She enjoys seeing the world through awkward contact lenses. Her maiden chuckle voyage took off in Washington D.C. (it’s all about the Washingtonians), but she now makes her way in Los Angeles, city of dream journals.

Her comedic goggles are dry and observational, and her act comes out sprinkled with absurdist wit and a quasi-whimsical take on the world.

Aparna was recently profiled in the Washington Post.

Her credits include 2007 NBC Stand Up for Diversity Finalist and 2008 College Tour, Last Comic Standing 6 (2008, NYC Regional Showcase), the Bridgetown Comedy Festival (2009-2010), the 2009 Bentzen Ball, the 2010 Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival, the 2010 Great American Comedy Festival, NPR, Reader’s Digest (large-print and regular print), The Washington Post Magazine, Slate V, and XM Radio.

“Aparna Nancherla’s quiet, introspective style reveals a comic who’s very much at home in her own mind and on stage. Rather than finding them uncomfortable or awkward, audiences are endeared to Aparna’s disclosures of her insecurities, neuroses, and resentment of her youthful appearance. … Because of this perceived innocence and vulnerability, there’s leeway for Aparna to delve into subjects that could, if handled improperly, make audiences recoil. Instead, they lean in, listen, and laugh.” - (Splitsider.com, 12/2010)

Shahryar Rizvi is a South-Asian stand-up comedian out of the Washington, DC area.  In 2009 he was runner-up in the Funniest Fed contest.  In 2007, he was a finalist in it and voted the online favorite in Washington Post's poll.  He has been interviewed by the Washington Post, Voice of America, and other publications.  He performs regularly at venues such as the DC Improv.

Don't miss this evening of fun and laughter!  Tickets will be available at the venue for $20 cash only.
